During the Social Innovation Summit last week, I attended a phenomenal breakout panel on AI.
Hilary Noon of AWS moderated the panel that included Dena Trujillo of Crisis Text Line, Charisse Dean of KPMG, and Pooja Shaw of the White House.
My key takeaways:
We don't know what we don't know. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and we are looking at a 3-5 year time horizon to maturity.
AI is not a silver bullet, but rather can be leveraged to optimize and upskill the workforce to be more future-focused.
In adopting AI, it’s important to consider the entire value chain: from building tools to governing them, and ensuring equity across it.
There is an inequitable distribution in understanding AI and how to use it–predicated on false information about what it can and can’t do–which can lead to a disparity in skillsets.
If we don’t educate individuals at all levels of society (including youth!), we are looking at a future of AI-haves and AI-have-nots.
So, in addition to continual education on the evolving AI landscape, here are three questions to consider before adopting AI:
1️⃣ What problem are you trying to solve?
2️⃣ What outcome are you trying to achieve?
3️⃣ How are you measuring success?
Considering both the macro and micro understanding of where we are and where we're headed, we can set ourselves off on the path to leveraging AI for good.
